UNESCO City of Design Subnetwork Meeting 2020

hosted by Graz and supported by Saint-Étienne

          Programme

October 2nd - 4th Mammamiaaa Dinners (Online Meeting)

This years‘ UNESCO City of Design Subnetwork Meeting will be held online. Yet we are keen to provide an opportunity for the network to connect informally and socialize beforehand. We are therefore organizing online dinners for the network in advance of the conference. These dinners form an opportunity for the network to meet informally, network and connect over food. Because, we are convinced, there is no better way to connect than over food.

These dinners are called Mammamiaaa dinners as the idea originates from a project of Matera 2019, European Capital of Culture. Andrea Paoletti, the organizer of this project in Matera 2019 will also be a keynote speaker at the online conference. In his talk he will refer to the Mammamiaaa project. We therefore encourage everyone to take part in the dinner experience and learn more about it later during the conference.

The dinners are hosted by a group of 3-5 persons. There is one host, who would like to share a story connected to the dinner and there are 2-4 online guests, who will connect over the virtual dinner table. We will match the groups according to everyone's interests and backgrounds to inspire great conversations. In advance we will also send out ice breaker questions and advise each dinner group on technical questions if they may arise.

At the end of each dinner, guests are invited to share their experience on the Mammamiaaa Facebook Group called ‘Mammamiaaa UNESCO'.

Discussion panel: Design Schools' response to the COVID-19 pandemic

Design Schools around the world came up with creative solutions to adapt their curriculums and learning environments in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this panel, we seek to discuss the impact these changes caused to students, teachers, and institutions.

The session begins with a 5-minute presentation from each panelist, who will present their experience or research, followed by a debate with questions from the audience.

Over the next few days, we'll include the panelists' names.

Important note: this is a private session, so the Cities of Design focal points are encouraged to invite a maximum of three representatives to watch the panel. Invitees should preferably comprise of design faculty members or professionals working in projects correlated to higher education.

After the meeting, the organizers will share the recording and a brief report with the focal points.

Panel Discussion and Keynote by Charles Landry

A number of urban development projects around the world have been launched under the term "Smart Cities" in recent years. Behind this are diverse and often widely divergent considerations of how to design a city in such a way that it is as "smart" as possible for a wide variety of tasks. The British researcher, publicist and inventor of the "Creative City Concept" Charles Landry will give a lecture on the second day and talk about the "digitized city".

Charles Landry is founder of the advising company Comedia, author of many books and is currently a fellow at the Robert Bosch Academy in Berlin. His overall aim is to help cities become more resilient, self-sustaining and to punch above their weight.

Panel Discussion and Keynote by Aglaée Degros

In view of climate change and the fact that more than half of the world's population already lives in cities that are constantly growing, the organisation and design of cities with their effects on resource consumption are of central importance in overcoming this millennium challenge. Aglaée Degros, architect and professor for urbanism, re-interprets the relation of mobility, landscape and urban development in various research and design projects and will give a lecture on the third day of the Subnetwork Meeting.
